Christopher Lasch and the Capitalist Realism of the Progressives

FB
X

In Christopher Lasch’s book “The Agony of the American Left” he claimed that early 20th-century “progressivism, except when it was informed by socialist or populist perspectives, was progressive chiefly in attacking the archaic entrepreneurial capitalism the existence of which impeded the rationalization of American industry.” In this video, we’ll be examining Lasch’s argument as well as the ideas he outlined in “The Culture of Narcissism” to see how the rise of this form of progressivism might have led to what Mark Fisher called “Capitalist Realism” even as we begin the process of subjecting Lasch to ruthless criticism.
